  AGRICULTURE DIVISION

      Our Objective

    To stimulate socio-economic development of the country by guiding and facilitating the agriculture sector to formulate and adopt appropriate policies, programmes, strategies and projects.

  Major agricultural policy thrusts

    To create an enabling environment, for commercialization of agriculture the government will institute the key institutional and policy reforms necessary for promoting increased private sector investment in agricultural production and processing and establish a competitive tariff and trade policy while paying attention to food security concerns at both macro and micro level. The agricultural policy emphasize on following areas :

    1. Development of organic and high tech agriculture, niche-market products, seed production and biotechnology related products.
    2. Encouraging domestic consumption of value-added rice products.
    3. Development of strategic markets and ensuring adequate seed and planting materials.
    4. Value-addition in livestock production, dairy in particular.
    5. Restructuring of irrigation sector in a way that will facilitate the implementation of integrated water resources management. Local level control of irrigation systems through people’s participation and the empowerment of social groups.
    6. Encouraging Plantation companies to enter into joint venture partnerships to undertake new investments in the processing and marketing plantation products to both local and international consumers.
    7. The establishment of smallholder societies enabling them to obtain material and services in an organized manner.
