Dr. R.H.S. Samarathunga, an eminent officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service assumed duties as the Secretary to Ministry of Finance on 12th January 2015 at the Ministry of Finance Premises Mr. Samarathunga who has obtained the B.A. (Honors) Degree in Economics from the University of Peradeniya joined the Sri Lanka Administrative Service in 1984. He has obtained his first post graduate degree from the Institute of Public Administration of Indraprasatha in New Delhi and the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Sri Jayawardenepura and the Masters of Science (MSC) from the University of Wisconsin, USA. Further, Mr. Samarathunga possesses a doctorate in Economics from the La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia

The Government of Republic of Korea has agreed to provide two concessional loans for USD 78.685 million (Approximately Rs.10,230 million) to improve water supply facilities for the people in Kurunegala and Kegalle districts in line with the Government’s target of providing safe drinking water for all citizensRapid spreading of chronic kidney disease has become a burning issue in Sri Lanka. Mahawa and Polpithigama divisions in Kurunegala District have been identified as the prominent areas of chronic kidney disease due to consumption of unsafe ground water. Also, dug wells in Ruwanwella area in Kegalle District get dry during the dry period and people in this area suffer from shortage of drinking water.
Rs.240 million Non-Project Grant from the Government of Japan for Provision of Japanese SME's Products - 2014

Based on long term economic cooperation between the two countries the Government of Japan has agreed to provide grant assistance of Rs. 240 million under Non Project Grant Aid. Government of Sri Lanka has decided to utilize this grant for the provision of advanced medical equipment to improve the health care facilities to uplift the health standards of Sri Lankan citizens and provide equipment for the development of ground water resources in drought affected areas in Sri Lanka.The signing of Exchange of Notes pertaining to the above Grant took place at the Ministry of Finance and Planning. His Excellency Nobuhito Hobo, Ambassador of Japan in Sri Lanka signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of the Government of Japan while P.B.Jayasundera, Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Planning signed on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka
